In a strategic move, Vietnam’s National Assembly has approved a new visa waiver policy aimed at attracting high-caliber individuals who can contribute meaningfully to the country’s socio-economic development.
Who qualifies for the new visa waiver?
Under this updated framework, visa exemptions will be granted to:

Experts, scientists, billionaires, renowned artists, top-tier athletes, and

Select travelers with the potential to enhance Vietnam’s international image or long-term development interests.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security have been tasked with jointly identifying eligible individuals and accelerating bilateral visa waiver agreements with partner countries.
A dual objective: openness with security
The government has emphasized that national security and public order remain top priorities in implementing this policy. The selection of visa-exempt individuals will be carefully evaluated to strike a balance between openness and safeguarding national interests.
In parallel, Vietnam is working to:

Review regulations related to temporary residence cards and long-term stay options, aiming for a more modern and competitive visa management system.
Falling behind in the region?
Vietnam currently offers visa waivers to only 25 countries, compared to 93 for Thailand and 158 for Malaysia. Its 3–5 day e-visa processing time also lags behind regional peers, where many countries now offer approvals within 24 hours.
