On June 10th, a letter from the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham) urged the U.S. government to reconsider proposed tariffs of up to 46% on Vietnamese exports. These tariffs, announced in early April by former President Donald Trump, are currently on a 90-day hold, during which both governments are engaging in high-level trade negotiations.
Why the pressure from AmCham? It’s simple. The trade deficit between Vietnam and the U.S. has been growing — but not because of unfair trade practices. Instead, AmCham emphasizes that it’s the result of a favorable investment climate in Vietnam and a strategic global shift in supply chains away from China. In short, Vietnam has become a rising star in global manufacturing.
AmCham’s letter highlights:
- Vietnam’s increasing role as a key U.S. partner in supply chain diversification.
- Concerns that higher tariffs would hurt American companies operating in Vietnam, their customers, and overall trade relations.
- A proposal that Vietnam help balance trade by further opening its market to U.S. goods and services.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese and U.S. trade officials, including Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyễn Hồng Diên and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, held negotiations in Paris on June 4. Both parties committed to moving talks forward, with a third technical round scheduled for later this month.
